Auf Wiedersehen Food Section?

Some of you may have heard rumblings that the Washington Post is planning to do away with the Food section for one, as well as Health and Home, and combine them into one section that would run multiple times a week. In today's City Paper, Erik Wemple is on the story, though the Post isn't really talking.

My sentiments echo this statement by Wemple: "Unless top editors come up with something special, the losers will be the foodies who will have to sift through a combined section three times a week to get a fraction of what they now get on Wednesday."

I love the food section and wish it were more often. I would imagine that they need to do something though, The Washington Post Co. reported yesterday that they saw a drop in fourth-quarter earnings, as earnings were down 4 percent from the prior-year's quarter (to $102.4 million from $105.9 million.

considering the lack of commitment to the section by The Post, considering my access via the Internet to publications that respect and nourish the "food and wine" enthusiast, considering the gray pages of the recipes that fill the spaces between the ads, considering the blogs, chat rooms etc. that keep us up-to-date on the food scene, considering we can concentrate on our distaste for any number of other quasi-local publications -- who cares. you could stop next Wednesday and well, maybe I can laminate the last one and sell it on ebay.

While every other major city is bulking up their food sections-- didn't the SF Chronicle just add a separate wine section?- the Post is going to fold! So unfortunate. Perhaps if the editors nourished a vision for the section it would be more profitable. Right now, it seems to be a mishmash reaction to trends and sales rather than a section the that encourages discussion on food trends, landmarks, and players in the food world. MeMc
