The Week in Review

What people are talking about locally ...

... I was comforted to find out I'm not alone in my fruitless search for laid-back spots to grab a drink on the weekends. Consensus seemed to be that if you don't want crowds, go to a bar that's not near any others. Temperance Hall, run by Joe Englert, Robb Lakritz and Josh Adler, was a reader favorite, with other mentions going to Wonderland, Trusty's, Continental and Quarry House. Any others you care to share with the group? ...

... Time to say goodbye to Foggy Bottom beer. ...

... If the Food section folds, will you care? ...

The thing that weirds me out about Wonderland is that it is, as the comment suggests, not near anything. And yet, it is absolutely packed on friday and saturday nights. I actually think that its remoteness contributes to the problem. If Wonderland's packed, people still try to stick it out, because there's nowhere else to go.

So a bar can be too close OR too far from other bars... We could devise a complicated equation to calculate probablity of bar crowds. Miles to nearest bar/beers on tap + (nevermind, I'm a journalist and therefore won't pretend the math part of my brain works that well.)
