Comet Snags Design Award

If you've been to Comet Ping Pong (5037 Connecticut Ave. NW), you know that the interior is a breath of fresh air after one too many downtown restaurant's resembling hotel ballrooms and lobbies. Now the space is being recognized by Hospitality Design magazine with an award for best casual restaurant design.

Co-owner James Alefantis and Joseph Wills collaborated with chef and co-owner Carole Greenwood and CORE on the design. (CORE also includes the new Brasserie Beck and Cafe du Parc in its portfolio.) Comet is featured in the design magazine's May/June issue.

Meanwhile, the buzz is building over Comet's new soft shell crab pie. The Express mentioned the crustacean topping recently, and on WETA's Dining Blog, Don Rockwell recommends mashing the crab into the pizza, "spreading the succulent drippings all over the crust, and then taking a little piece of shell in each bite." (Also note his proclamation that Comet has the best pizza in town.)

Soft shell crab on a pizza in an award-winning interior? Sounds like a perfect summer date to me.

Glad to hear they won the design award...now maybe they can do something about the really really poor service

have they started posting their prices either on a menu or their menu board?...went once and found that particular eccentricity and the poor service tiresome and have not returned; a little Carol Greenwood goes a long way..also the hard bench seats in the award winning decor are not comformtable and if you have a hyperactive kid bouncing on a connected seat....

Boy you folks must have been there on a bad day because we take our kids every week and find the staff to be super friendly, the pizza choices varied and delicious enough to satisfy kids and grown ups both and the on tap beer choices excellent (especially the Allagash) Just had my partner's birthday party there (squeezing 20 people around the long center table) and everyone raved about the place and the pizza.

haven't been there, but the place looks uncomfortable. very interesting to look at, but to sit, eat, languish and enjoy a meal? i sort of doubt it, though maybe a meal on the go. it seems too much about the concept while forgetting the prime function of the space in my opinion.

The pizza is itself is really bad, unofrtunately, so no topping will save it. Fun concept, but they don't know how to make a pie. Two Amy's, which is not that far, blows this place away.

Comet is amazing...2Amys and Paradiso have their places, but nowhere is as hip and fun as Comet. I've been there a few times and am jonesin' for either the #1, the #3, or the soft shell crab. Plus Ping Pong, great beer and wine. Fantastic service. I can't say enough...Get there while you can still get a seat.
