I Love Lucy

If you follow the food scene in DC, you've probably heard about the perky chocolate shop that recently opened at 1529 14th St. NW (pictured).

Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury Confections — aka ACKC (just in case you haven't had your RDA of acronyms) — serves multiple roles in the neighborhood. Stop in to shop for a box of chocolates, novelty cocoa gifts or a potted orchid. Or have a seat for a cup of hot chocolate or espresso. "It’s kind of an alternative to the coffee bar,” co-owner Rob Kingsbury told me last summer.

One of the biggest draws is the customizable hot chocolate menu. Pick your milk (whole, skim, etc.), your infusion (like lavender and orange) and the type of chocolate or go for one of the suggested creations, all named for lovely ladies of the screen and stage (Joan, Audrey, Marilyn, Liz, etc.).

I'm currently having a love affair with Lucy, a (literally) hot little number infused with a spicy hit of chipotle pepper and topped with whipped cream and a generous dusting of cinnamon. I love her in the morning and at night, thanks to the shop's extensive hours. Been by and have a favorite mistress? Let us know.

Nice spot but what a horrible name. "Artfully Chocolate Kingsbury Confections"? I would shorten to just Kingsbury's. And they have bad acoustics for a cafe - need to be sure good music is piped in. (Oh, and the chocolate is good.)

whenever I see the word perky, I think of boys and men trying to quantify breasts ... at first I thought I would leave it alone but then you drifted into mistresses and something luscious going on with Lucy ... I will definitely stop in this weekend and see how hot the action is ... or at least the chocolate.

I think you're on the wrong blog: check here for literal perkiness: http://thecandypitch.blogspot.com/

The Diva Drinks are delicious. I've tried the Charro and the Lucy. The Lucy leaves a nice tingle in the back of the throat without being overwhelming with spicey heat. It's a great neighborhood place. I like to stop in before going to the Dupont Market on Sundays.

I wish they had the cafe menu on their site. It's been open awhile now, so why no menu?

Beanie, when I visited in Dec. they said that for now they are offering sweet and savory pastries from Buzz. Pretty much what they offer is in the display case. In the future they will consider expanding the menu and deal with getting a liquor license-or not. I guess they're allowing ACKC Cocoa Bar to develop organically.

Just this morning they had (from Buzz) a bacon and cheese scone, croissants, pain chocolate, coffe cakes muffins and more... Maybe the web site will update soon.

I will definately have to get to know Lucy. Can you tell me if it is European style hot chocolate?

I love Lucy as well. In fact, I have yet to make it to any of the other lovely ladies on the menu...every time I go in, I think "it's okay, this will be my last Lucy." Damn them for being right on the way to my office!

DC Social Critic: The drinks are made with bona fide chocolate shavings, scooped out right in front of you.
