Pumpkin Whoopie Pies Return To Market

When it comes to covetable goodies from area farmers markets, one of my favorites are the pumpkin whoopie pies from Pecan Meadow Farm, available at the 14th and U Farmers Market.

After a seasonal hiatus, the whoopie pies will be back at the market this Saturday, and, in a case of early birds getting the worm, no sleeping in if you hope to score one. (The market opens at 9 a.m.)

The sweets, which predate the current whoopie pie craze, are made by Pecan Meadow's Lois Shirk. She starts
with her son's pumpkins  — no canned stuff here   — the farm's free-range eggs (also delicious on their own) and
a blend of flours that includes their own whole wheat, farm-ground. Unhappy with the ingredients in store-bought vanilla extract, the Shirks make their own.

Finally the fluffy cakes are filled with sweet cream cheese icing or Keswick Creamery's Quark cheese.

A from-scratch treat perfect for the fall season.
