5 Local Beers To Drink Now

Editor's note: Guest contributor THF chimes in with five local beers you should be drinking now.

DC is quickly becoming a haven for beer lovers. This year has
brought brewing back to the District — several new operations are slated
to open soon  — and has seen multiple breweries in the suburbs so far.
Between the city's downtown brewpubs and the influx of new
microbreweries, the choices of fresh beer are nearly endless. Here are
five local beer picks:

1. 80 Shilling from Mad Fox Brewing Company in Falls Church

2. Optimal Witbier from Port City Brewing Company in Alexandria

3. Belgian Abbey-style seasonal from Capitol City Brewing Company in DC

4. Nut Brown Ale from  District Chophouse and Brewery in DC

5. Old Rag Mountain Ale from Shenandoah Brewing Company in Alexandria

THF is a Penn Quarter resident who has enjoyed a wide variety of beverages on a number of continents. His blog, The Hip Flask, celebrates the culture of drinking in a thoughtful, deliberate manner.

Any suggestions on where to find at least the Port City on the DC side of the river? Do any of the other places sell bottles or cans?

I've had the Optimal Wit at Churchkey and I think some Va Whole Foods carry their growlers. I'll try to find out about bottles/cans from the others, but I know that's what some of the forthcoming breweries want to do - actually sell retail.

Port City posts the outlets on a photo of their chalk board on their Facebook page. Not as good as an actual list typed out but you can see where to find it. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150112136977432&set=pu.276660797431&theater No date when that update was made.

Update on Port City bottles: we have just begun our bottling operation! We'll have bottles of all our beers released the week of March 28th. Thanks for your patience!

Thanks, I appreciate the information. Beers like this are another victim of MD distribution laws, I think.

Don't forget about the brewery over at Franklin's in Hyattsville. It's fantastic and well worth the trip just over the District line.

Justin's cafe near the ballpark also serves Optimal Wit
