Q:

I was curious if you had any suggestions for good wineries in the Charlottesville area? - Lilly

Amanda says:
Heading out of DC on a wine tasting weekend is one of my favorite ways to getaway. And around the Charlottesville area, you'll find some of Virginia's top wineries.

My first stop would be Barboursville, which has an impressive tasting room with some serious red blends. Hit Horton Vineyards for tastes of their lovely Viognier.

And did you know Dave Matthews owns a Charlottesville winery? I've really enjoyed tastes of the musician-owned Blenheim Vineyards Chardonnay, made by winemaker Kirsty Harmon.

The tasting room at Veritas offers some beautiful mountain views (try the award-winning Petit Verdot). You'll also find some great Viogniers at Keswick Vineyards.

For more ideas, check out the Monticello Wine Trail. And if you're tasting a little farther north, read my report on visiting a few wineries in the midst of a tropical storm back in 2008.
