Ask Amanda: Charlottesville Wineries

Q:

I was curious if you had any suggestions for good wineries in the Charlottesville area? - Lilly

Amanda says:
Heading out of DC on a wine tasting weekend is one of my favorite ways to getaway. And around the Charlottesville area, you'll find some of Virginia's top wineries.

My first stop would be Barboursville, which has an impressive tasting room with some serious red blends. Hit Horton Vineyards for tastes of their lovely Viognier.

And did you know Dave Matthews owns a Charlottesville winery? I've really enjoyed tastes of the musician-owned Blenheim Vineyards Chardonnay, made by winemaker Kirsty Harmon.

The tasting room at Veritas offers some beautiful mountain views (try the award-winning Petit Verdot). You'll also find some great Viogniers at Keswick Vineyards.

For more ideas, check out the Monticello Wine Trail. And if you're tasting a little farther north, read my report on visiting a few wineries in the midst of a tropical storm back in 2008.

If you get a chance heat to Sunset Hills Vineyard: http://www.sunsethillsvineyard.com/

I love the ambiance, food and wine!

The only wine in VA worth drinking is at Barboursville. Everything else is swill.

Head - not heat ;-)

White Hall is a great Virginia vineyard, about 40 minutes outside Charlottesville. Their Cab Franc is great.

King Family over in Crozet is fantastic. The grounds are beautiful too.

Our favorite in that area is Pollak. Family-owned and based on techniques the owner picked up after working for many years in the Russian River Valley in California. The 2007 Estate Chardonnay is one of the best Virginia wines I have ever tasted, if not the best.

I miss Kluge.

I second King Family. We did a little wine tour this spring - went to Veritas, King Family, Pollak, and Cardinal Point. King Family was definitely our favorite!

Great ideas, all! Keep 'em coming. Sounds like I need to do some more tasting too.

Jefferson Vineyards has a good viognier and reserve chardonnay. Delfosse Vineyards (about 20 miles southwest of Charlottesville) has a nice selection of Bordeaux style reds.

King Family has a great venue and great wine (the Crozet Rose is easy on the wallet but is flavorful and perfect for a summer day). Additionally, if you're there on Sundays between Memorial Day and Labor Day, you can enjoy a free Polo match.

After all this drinking I'm sure you will need some great food. Head to Mas, a terrific tapas bar in town, for dinner.

Agreed, MAK. I absolutely loved Masa.

king family is beautiful. nice seating area outside and a delicious cheese selection to go along with their warm baguettes. veritas is lovely, especially in the fall because of a cozy indoor space with great views. pippin hills is one i'd like to try next.

Made the mistake of going to Barboursville at the end of the day. Too rushed, too ignored, too disinterested. After the views at Veritas, it could hardly compete. Didn't drink one bottle that I would buy (at Barboursville).
Veritas was beautiful and luscious! Enjoyed a bottle and cheese plate on the patio overlooking the mountains.

Veritas is beautiful but did not enjoy their wines as much as those at Barboursville
