5 Bites: Luke Johnson

This weekly helping of 5 Bites comes from Luke Johnson, who writes the food and recipe blog The Passion Fruits.

1. A cocktail at PS 7's — ANY cocktail. Gina Chersevani's amazing, and even on the (very) rare occasion I end up with something I don't absolutely love, it's still a fun and thought-provoking drink.

2. Spicy dry-sauteed beef at Joe's Noodle House. It's psychotically spicy and kind of looks like something the cat would leave in the sandbox, but divinely, deliciously addictive all the same. It's the only thing we always HAVE to order.

3. Beet and whipped goat cheese toast at Estadio. Deceptively simple, this is light but manages to deliver sweetness, tang and crunch in a totally addictive package. And I may never have it again since it's impossible to get a table...

4. Grilled octopus at the Liberty Tavern. Both crispily charred and miraculously tender, this has spoiled all other octopus preparations for me. FOREVER.

5. Dessert soufflés at L'Auberge Chez François. You can't get more old school or gemütlich than this, but the dessert soufflés are beyond dreamy — it doesn't matter if you don't have any room. Make someone else get one too and then you can swap the sauces that come with it. Synergy!
