Majestic chef Shannon Overmiller cooks with a Brainfood student at a past Grill-Off.

One of my favorite local nonprofit organizations, Brainfood, does an amazing job teaching life skills to DC high school students through cooking and food. The group operates two kitchens, one in Columbia Heights, one in Penn Quarter, where students gather for classes during the school year and summer.

You can help support this great organization when Brainfood hosts its fifth annual Grill-Off at the Decatur House Museum on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Come say hi — I'll be at the judges' table with Nycci Nellis of TheListAreYouOnIt.com, Mark Kuller of Proof and Estadio, and Jessica Sidman of Bisnow.

Teams of local chefs, amateur cooks and Brainfood program graduates will compete using a pantry of secret ingredients a la Iron Chef. The competing chefs are Kyle Bailey of Birch & Barley, Adam Sobel of Bourbon Steak, Kevin Villalovos of Cure, Teddy Folkman of Granville Moore’s, Scott Drewno of The Source, Justin Bittner of Bar Pilar, and Victor Albisu of BLT Steak.

Tickets are $75 per person and include hors d’oeuvres, a buffet, wine tasting and an open bar. And saying hi to the great chefs and (ahem) super cool judges.
