Win Tickets to IWFF Sommelier Showdown

As part of next weekend's International Wine & Food Festival, some of DC’s top sommeliers will show off their wine smarts at the Sommelier Showdown on Thursday, Feb. 9 from 7 to 9 p.m.

And because I know how much you fab readers love to eat and drink, Metrocurean has two pairs of tickets to give away — a $300 value per pair.

To enter: Leave a comment with a favorite wine before 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6. I'll randomly choose two winners, who will each receive two tickets, announced in the comment section Monday afternoon (so check back!).

What's in store for the showdown? Sommeliers including Theo Rutherford of Fiola, Brent Kroll of Adour, Elli Benchimol of Chef Geoff’s and Guy Golan of J&G Steakhouse will compete to identify wines with hidden labels.

To pair with the night's wines will be dishes created by Todd Gray of Equinox, Xavier Deshayes of the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center (where the event will be held) and Jaime Montes de Oca of Zentan.

Tickets to the Sommelier Showdown are available online at www.wineandfooddc.com for $150.

Good luck!

My favorite go-to wine is Riesling! Pairs well with most foods, very celebratory, or just plain refreshing on a summer's day.

Sounds like a great event! I don't specifically have a favorite wine but I like a dry, crisp white most of the time!

La Mozza Maremma Toscana Aragone 2007 - great wine brought in by Joe Bastianich. Had it at his and Mario Batali's restaurant in Vegas - perfetto!

I was going to go with 2 buck chuck, but the Avalon Merlot and Cab Sauvignon out of Napa are both pretty amazing.

Garnacha Blanca from Odysseus Winery in Priorat, Spain. One of my favorite grapes in general. This is a particularly good example of the varietal and is a nice change from the more common reds produced with the grape.

I should add Chrysalis Sarah's Patio Red as well.

We are loving Layer Cake Primitivo right now. The big jammy flavors are perfect for staying warm on cold winter nights.

Favorite wine = Old Vine Zin. My dad introduced me to it and it is amazing. Zinfandels are frequently looked down upon, but Old Vine Zin is incredibly rich, complex, and beautiful.

How about one white and one red:
White: Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

Both not too pricey but both amazing and fairly easy to get...

I enjoy champagne....anytime. Doesn't have to be a celebration. I'd drink it on a Tuesday evening while watching Glee just as quickly as I'd pop open a bottle for a friend's engagement, new job, or other major life event.

One of our go-to wines (i.e., relatively cheap and good) is Hillinger Zweigelt. Actually met Leo Hillinger at a wine event at the Austrian embassy years ago (very cool guy), where we were introdcued to several of his wines.
